On January 15, Windows 7 entered what is called an “Extended Support” phase. There are quite a few articles flying about that are spreading FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) about Windows 7 going the way of XP.
Fear not. Microsoft had a tendency of giving things the most confusing names possible. Things like Windows Home Premium (The lowest version of Windows Home,) and the Xbox One (The third generation of Xbox.) Essentially, what this actually means to users, is that Microsoft is ending free support, and no longer making new features or tweaks to Windows 7.
Windows 7 will still receive security updates, and critical system updates into 2020. There is still plenty of time left for your Windows 7 machine. With Windows 10(I guess they are counting 8.1 as Windows 9) due later this year, it is time to be cautiously optimistic, as good Windows products tend to skip a generation (Windows 95: Good, Windows ME:Bad, Windows XP:Good…etc.)
Below is a chart showing the scheduled End of Mainstream Support and End of Life for current Windows products.
